Description
ONEOIDA - Geschichte eines Irokesen in Deutschland, 2 Teile (Oncoida - The Story of an Iroquois in Germany, two parts in two consequent issues of a half-weekly periodical);IN: Hamburgische Address-Comtoir-Nachrichten, 50. und 51. Stueck, Donnerstag, den 28 Junius, 1798 UND 51. Stueck, Montag, den 2. Julius, 1798.4,5 pages from a total of 16 pages of both issues.Uncut, fold-outs.Extremely rare complete-in-two-parts story: "After Franklins Head and Washingtons sword brought independance to the thirteen United States of the North-Americans, SENFT, a colonel of their artillery and Knight of the Order-of-Cincinnatus, came to Germany in 1884 to visit his relatives in Meinungen, his birthtown. Dies honorable man reached his position only by his own sincere work. Beside warship he was also sent by the 'States' for negotiations with the wild neighbours because of his long experience in their language and habits. In that time he was sent to the Iroquois who resided in the area of the river Oneoida in New York. His friendly behaviour brought him the the unlimited trust of these Indians and because of his friendlyness he received everything from them which he did not get by strength and force. ... A wild boy of 13 years loved him and tried to be as close with him as possible, forgetting about his games, even about his father and mother. "I am travelling to Europe soon" Senft told him; would you like to come with me? ... The whole tribe gathered and the chief's voices where heard on this subject and finally it was decided to let the boy go, but against the written treaty with the Colonel that he will bring him back alive and healthy. ... He (Senft) called him Oneoida. ...came Oneoida via Holland to Germany and was stared at like a strange animal which made him sad, but seeing Meinungen and the relatives of his master made him happy..." He soon became famous for his perfection in archery and was invited to the local duke who asked him to shoot the pigeons from the roof which he refused because the duke could not proof to him the they (the pigeons) are his belonging. On another occasion he beat the duke who was famous for his riding of wild horses in a riders competition which did not bring them closer... The author (who is not Senft himself but nowhere mentioned) decribes how he came to know Oneoida and that he invited him to visit his tribe when the time of his return to America came close.Certainly a rare document of American Indians in Europe in the 18th century, even more as it is spread over two parts of a very rare news-periodical of that time. The pictures show the frontcover of both issues, both starting with our story, each followed by the inside page contiunation (the second volume contains another half page of the story which is not shown in detail here. Then you see both volumes unfolded with their insides up where the second page s of the stries are on top right (the last half page is seen on the right foldout top left (got it?). The Indian style childrens bracelet (from my little son...) is just put on the text not to reveal all secrets and willl be sent with the issues to the buyer as a playful gift relating to the story (...don't worry, he will not miss it).The condition is quite fine, some slight - natural - browning.More 18th century publications on North America in our actual auctions, also ENDING TONIGHT.mordamerikanische indianer north american indians ureinwohner aboriginees tribe tribes irokese irokesen iroquoi newyork american civil war usa u s a vereinigte staaten von amerika united states of america nordamerika northamerica canada amérique du nord septentrionale 18. achtzehntes jahrhundert 18th eighteenth century Thank you for your attention!
