Description
(SECKENDORFF, Gustav von; i.e.: Patrick Peale):Briefe über Nord-Amerika, aus dem handschriftlichen Tagebuche eines Reisenden, Erster Brief: Ueber die auswandernden Deutschen (=Letters about North-America from the manuscript Diary of a Traveller, first letter: On the emigrating Germans);AND:Briefe ueber Nord-Amerika - Schicksale eines deutschen Zimmermanns in Filadelfia (=Letters... - Destinies of a German Carpenter in Philadelphia);2 parts (=all published); IN: Der Neue Teutsche Merkur vom Jahre 1800, herausgegeben von C[hristoph] M[artin] Wieland, Erster und Dritter Band.Weimar, Gebrueder Gaedicke, 1800.Page 18-32 / p. 205-218, together 29 pages {from a total of (1)-80, (I)-XVI / (161)-242, (XXXIII)-XXXXIV pages + 1 foldout musical score};Blue original printed wrappers; 8vo.(ca. 18,5 x 10 cm).(Starnes: Der Teutsche Merkur - Ein Repertorium, Sigmaringen 1994; p. 69, 148f) 1. editions of Seckendorff autobiographical 'Letters', complete in these two single volumes of this main literary (monthly) periodical of that time. The action of both parts mainly takes place in Philadelphia. The second volume of the 'magazine' which does not contain anything related to North-America is also available for 80$ in case the buyer prefers this completeness. Lord G. A. v. Seckendorff (1775 Germany - 1823 Alexandria, Louisiana) was a german poet and painter, studied in Leipzig, Freiurg i. Br. and Wittenberg (Luther-town). From 1796-98 he lived in North-America, then returned to Germany to work in different professions, became Art-professor in Saxonia and later worked as a travelling artist under the name Patrick Peale. In 1821 he returned to North-America where he died in 1823 just after he became acknowledged artist. Some of his paintings are still held by American Art-Institutions.The pictures show the wrapppers and inside flaps with the index (The 'Letters' are No. III in the first and No. V in the 'second' volume), then parallel the first page of the article, two from tthe running text and the last in vol. I and the last but one of vol. II(i.e.III) because here the next page only contains 1,5 lines plus the announcement of another suite which actually never came (see 'Starnes').It is a little complicate to explain the structure of this two-volume 'Letters' but it is definately complete as it is (even without the middle volume which however is available as well). The condition of both volumes is fine!
