Description
pelewis Store Quite an oustanding sampler in that it is in such good condition;retains it's original colours and is so detailed telling many stories. Also a major plus is that it is unframed leaving the new owner all the options. It is also a major technical achievement for a young girl of 8 in the early 1800s. It is 43 by 38 cms or 19 by 15 inches The photos hardly do justice to all the detail ...also the overall backing colour is good [a rather more light brown colour than some of the lighter ones taken in daylight]PHOTOSi, 3 ,4 ,11 and 12 taken with flash are nearer the actual colour ALSO the last one which is of the REVERSE of tne sampler [which i feel is of is of interest to see the excellent condition after 180 years] DESCRIPTION:There is a border of red yellow and green flower garland. Then from the top ;a large alphabet in blue and under a smaller one in red and white(some stitching missing from last 4 letters.Below is the verse " the love of friends is much......the love of parents more.....the love of god is such....as no one can restore....the cherubims winged every way....to keep the way...of the tree of life" Under which are 2 delightful cherubs in pink and red holding a central garland and star to centre.Either side are 2 charming cartoons of Abel...keeping his sheep..I particularly like the sheep in the field!..and on the right side ..Cain tilling the ground .of his garden. Below is the very accomplished tree of life with a tree full of ripe apples ,intwined in the tree is the serpent . Adam and Eve are naked either side. There are many birds, dogs, trees, garlands, flower sprays and even a peacock. It is a truely outstanding piece of work. The edging is stromg and folded over with holes where the original framing tacks would have been....these will not be seen when reframed Please ask if you have any questions.... The geneology search i have done on Mary is very likely as her birth in 1823 fits...but is not conclusive...as although it is a particular sur name to the county of Yorkshire...one can never be 100per cent positive
