Description
Here's a 105-year-old Zon-O-Phone Concert Grand.  This is a large, beautiful and early Zon-O-Phone disc phonograph that rarely turns up on Ebay (or anywhere else for that matter).  With a base that measures 15" wide by 12" deep by 7" high, and a 30" brass horn that extends out approximately 25" from the face of the cabinet, it is among the most stately of all front mount phonographs.  And it works great, with an original motor that's still torquey enough to breeze through several records with a single winding.  Better yet, it can play all sizes of early '78s -- 7", 9", 10" and 12". As you can see in the pictures, this machine is in excellent condition throughout, exhibiting typical wear but nothing out of the ordinary.  Cabinet finish is original with a gorgeous patina, and the cabinet itself has tight joints on all sides.  The bottom is still firmly adhered to the underside of the base, and both of the cabinet decals are original and in excellent condition.  There's a blemish along the lower right edge of the base.  I'm not sure if it's in the finish or in the wood, but it doesn't bother me (in fact I would argue that it adds character) so I've left it alone. The nickeling on the bedplate exhibits tarnish & wear typical of the earliest, flat Zon-O-Phone bedplates.  Speed control thumbscrew is original with nickeling that's oxidized.  Turntable is original and correct, with the still-working spring-loaded pin.  Turntable felt is original, as is the turntable brake.  The polished brass horn is as beautiful as it looks in the photographs -- no dents, no dings, no damage of any sort. Like most surviving early Zon-O-Phones, this example has some reproduction parts, but they're meticulously crafted and essentially identical to the originals.   The long throat Concert V reproducer was made by Mirek Stehlik in Kitchener, Ontario and is a small work of art unto itself.  Precisely machined and arguably better built than the original.  The sweat-soldered horn elbow is a replacement from Wyatt's Musical Americana, and the fancy support arm is a nicely aged reproduction, probably made in the 1970's and now layered with a beautiful patina.  The horn support bracket is also a reproduction, but like the support arm, it is now old enough to have acquired an authentic patina.. That's about it.  The phonograph is too large to be shipped to countries where the USPS will not ship packages whose length plus girth exceeds 79", so if you're bidding from overseas, make sure to inquire about shipping availability first.  The horn will be shipped in one oversized, double-boxed package, and the machine will be shipped in another.  Combined shipping weight approx. 60 lb. Both boxes will be carefully packed and well-padded.  Buyer prepays and covers shipping costs.  Paypal okay.
