Description
Here's a great old map of South America which was published as the game board for Edward Wallis's "Wallis's New Game of Wanderers In the Wilderness." This game was one of many of this sort published by Edward Wallis between 1813 and the mid-1840's. The "board" consists of lithographed paper prints mounted on linen so as to form a folding map. Apparently these games came packaged in slipcases with rule books and the like. This listing consists of the map only.... which has been framed (somewhat recently) under glass.....the case, rules, and any other parts originally with the game are missing. One of these games is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK. Interestingly, Wallis chose to picture the entire continent of South America as a wilderness with all manner of exotic animals, birds, and native peoples. The natives wrestle enormous snakes, sharks swim in the Pacific, monkeys swing from trees, and anteaters forage in the jungles. With the exception of a couple buildings on the coasts and a sailing ship there are no signs of "civilization." The map is dotted with numbers which must relate to the game playing....with "1" showing two Anglo adventurers at the upper right.....and "50" being at the southern tip of the continent .....complete with erupting volcanoes. In the Pacific Ocean Wallis even included a tiny island with a shipwreck and fellow looking like Robinson Crusoe standing on the beach! In the bottom margin the publisher is identified: "London Edward Wallis 42 Skinner Street." The cartouche features exotic animals, the game's title, and the name "J H Banks" printed below. Curiously there also is a partial fingerprint in green just below that cartouche. This map was framed when we found it and we have not disassembled it. In good condition the game board does have some light foxing-like spots or toning and some of the square sections have minor edgewear from folding.....which is not distracting. Around the cartouche there seems to be some creasing but you have to search to see it. The yellowish blotches in the upper right corner in the one photo are reflections not defects. A colorful decorative map of South America which also may appeal to game board buffs. Please ask any questions which come to mind as our expertise in antique maps is very limited. Measurements: Sight size (26.25 inches by 20 inches)/ Overall with frame (29.25 inches by 23 inches). NOTE: Please ignore ebay's quirky shipping info.....we will arrange the most cost effective means of shipping with the buyer.
