Description
This US Navy Compass was salvaged from Apra Harbor, Guam in the early 1970s. It was found intact at approximately 60 feet on a small wrecked U.S. Navy ship. I don't know for sure what type of ship it was, but probably an ocean going tug or something similar. The markings on the compass read around the dial as follows: U.S. Navy, BUSHIPS, NO. 1 COMPASS, MARK I, MODEL I, a symbol N with a circle around it, followed by 12134, 1943, LIONEL CORPORATION N.Y. If you zoom in on picture you can read all the markings around the dial. I acquired the Telescopic Alidade and it's wooden box from a Navy Diver on Guam, also in the 1970's, while I managed a scuba business on the island . It matches the compass perfectly. The alidade is missing the mounting rails for the lens, but other than that it is all there. The markings on the original box read as follows and can be seen in picture 4. Line 1, U.S. NAVY - BUREAU of SHIPS, line 2, TELESCOPIC ALIDADE, line 3, MARK 2 MOD. 1 SER. 5504, line 4, CONTRACT No. 80914 1941, line 5, SPENCER LENS CO. On the top of the Alidade the markings are as follows: line 1, USN BU SHIPS, line 2, TELESCOPIC ALIDADE, line 3, MK II MOD. I, line 4, symbol N with a circle around it, followed by 5504 1941. The measurements of the compass, telescopic alidade and its box are as follows: Compass-12" in diameter including gyro ring, Compass alone measures 9.75" in diameter and its height measures 6"; Telescopic Alidade-overall length of telescope, etc. is 13", and the ring's diameter is 10", and its height is 4.5"; The Telescopic Alidade's Box-14"X15" and 6.5" high. This compass and alidade are WWII original US Navy equipment and were probably used late in the war and in the post war period. These pieces hold many meaningful memories for my wife and I, as they have been part of our treasured collection of maritime memorabilia for over thirty years. They will be hard to part with. Our hope is that they will end up on display where many people will be able to see them and appreciate them for the historically significant pieces they are! Thank You and Happy Bubbles to all! Pete P.S. The two items and the box weigh approximately 85 lbs. Shipping and handling will be calculated at the time of sale. UPS will be used to ship unless otherwise specified by the buyer. Thanks again, Pete
