Description
WW II Authentic Ships' Identification Models Rare US Fleet Set Consisting of 46 Ships in the Original Wood Carrying Case Made by Comet Metal Products Co, Inc of Richmond Hill, NY & South Seas Studios of S. Salem, NY As I understand, this extraordinary set is circa 1940 and came from an estate in Annapolis, Md (home of the US Naval Academy). Sets like these are very rare and the set is complete except for 1 ship. The case is plywood, painted the Navy issue blue/gray and it is solid, but there is some deterioration on the outside ( a piece missing - see photo) but this does not seem to compromise the strength of the case. The hinged case is 27 inches wide by 14 inches tall and 2 3/4" thick. It opens up to a very impressive display and is quite heavy. There are 16 compartments on each side of the case ... some having 2 ships per compartment, others just one. The case has rope handles. Each of the ships are mounted on ply board and are easily removed. They pull out from grooved slots on the sides. Some of the bases have some delamination, but this is certainly not serious and all of the ships are secure on the mountings. The ships range in length from 2 inches to about 9 inches. Each is inscribed on the side of the vessel as to the name / class. This information is also stamped on the bottom of the base. I will list what is marked on each ship or mounting board: Buckley Class US DE, Raven Class, DD 186 Class US-DD, Evarts Class DE-5, Porter Class US-DD, Somers Class US-DD, Pensacola Class US-CA, Wichita Class US-CA, Portland(Portland Class) US-CA, New Orleans US-CA, Bogue Class US-CV, Independence Class US-CV, Mahon Class US-DD, Chicago Class, North Hampton Class US-CA, Cleveland Class US-CL, Omaha Class US-CL, Sims Class US-DD, Phoenix Class CL, Atlanta Class CL, St Louis Class US-CL, Ridley Class US OO(?), Iowa Class US-BB, Saratoga US-CV, Yorktown Class US-CV, Ranger US-CV,Colorado Class US-BB, Arkansas US-BB, Tennessee - Tennessee Class US-BB, New York Class US-BB, Sangamon US CVE, South Dakota Class US-BB, North Carolina Class US-BB, Nevada US-BB, New Mexico Class US-BB, Baltimore Class US-CA, Fletcher Class US-DD, Benson Class US DD, Livermore Class US DD, Farragut Class US DD, Barnegut Class US AVP, Terror Class US CN, Dixie Class US AD, Fulton Class US AS, Cimarron Class US AD and Curtiss Class US AV. Quite a fleet, huh ..?! As I mentioned, there is one ship missing and I do not know which one that would be ... In trying to determine a value, I would say it is difficult, but I did come across an ID model of the Battleship Oriskany made by Comet Metal Products that was 22 inches long and I sold it here on ebay for over $500.00. That is just one ship ..... So, a set such as this is quite unusual to find. I have additional pictures for anyone who wants more detail. Please contact me with any questions prior to bidding. This is a 10 day reserve auction. I am relisting this item because there was a lot of interest the first time around but it failed to meet the reserve which averages out to about 18.50 per ship. Given the rarity of this set, I've been told that this reserve amount is quite reasonable. So, if you are bidding, please bear this in mind. The winning bidder is to await a final invoice from me that will reflect the accurate shipping cost to your address. I am trying to be fair to both of us. Thanks for dropping by and good luck to those who are bidding !!!
