Description
FREE DOMESTIC SHIPPING! Before placing a bid, please be sure to read our entire TERMS section (below) for details and conditions. Thanks! Walter and Frank Sanborn opened a small drug store in Mexico City in 1903, and it eventually grew into a huge nation-wide retail conglomerate. Noted art dealer and silversmith Frederick W. Davis (1880-1961) began supervising Sanborn’s Antiques & Fine Arts department in 1935, and, during his tenure, personally oversaw the design and production of the firm’s sterling silver pieces. This handsome set - with lobed or 'melon-ribbed' bodies and lids, and intricate reticulated feet - consists of a tray, teapot, coffee pot, creamer, covered sugar bowl, waste bowl, and kettle with stand and burner. Total weight is approximately 275 ounces avoir. - or about 250 troy ounces. Note that the tray handle and the kettle handle match, as do elements from the other handles, and that all the lids except the sugar are hinged. The next series of pix show each piece individually. Weights (avoir ounces) and sizes are: Coffee pot = 37.6 oz, 8 1/2" tall; Teapot = 34.9 oz, 7" tall; Creamer = 9.2 oz, 4" tall; Sugar - 12.6 oz, 5" tall; Waste bowl = 6.3 oz, 2 1/4" tall by 4 5/8" across rim; Kettle = 48.3 oz, 9 1/2" tall; Stand and burner = 20.4 oz, 4 7/8" tall; Tray = 104 oz, 25 7/8" handle to handle and 17" wide. The next pic is a close-up of one part of the 4-sided foot on the coffee pot; except for the burner, of course, all of the pieces have the same style foot, including the tray. Then second pic below shows the '3 Owls' mark found on these items, representing Frank Sanborn & his two sons, which was introduced in 1931. All pieces in this set carry this mark except for the kettle stand, which is unmarked - though it's clearly silver and clearly an original part of this set. The burner also has the outline version of the Mexican eagle mark with the number 22 in the center; its wicks are intact and it appears unused. Finally, we show close-ups of a handle and one foot from the tray. The intricate feet on all of these pieces are cast, and there appears to be some hand-applied decorations to them as well. This set has seen a bit of normal use over the years, but overall condition is excellent. There are no breaks or cracks on any of the pieces, and all of the feet are intact. The only minor condition issues are: one small dent near the middle of the creamer; some slight bends to the underside of the coffee lid, which cause it to stick a bit; one foot on the teapot is slightly bent upward; and the usual scuffs and scratches (some deeper than others) to the tray, all of which can easily be buffed out by a professional.
