Description
Made by K Bohall of London  (makers name on inset  ivorine plate). In the late 1800's to early 1900's these electro-therapy or Faraday devices were extremely popular for the treatment of just about every ailment you could think of and in widespread use during Victoria's and EdVII's  reign. This one seems to be in pretty good and complete condition considering it's considerable age. A nice, and rare, collector's item. It comes with ( in a side draw)  the following instruments or attachments for delivering pulses or shocks ( I think) :-  2 Wooden handles with brass fitments, 2 white metal (chrome?) tubes which can be screwed to the former as can the 3 large shaped (heavy) cloth covered pads. Another small cloth covered probe, and a sort of wire brush thing. Also there are 2 cloth covered cables with metal attachments at either end.The lovely old mahogany case is nicely  "dovetailed" with a hinged lid which is kept shut with 2 ? shape catches. The key to lock nor keyhole surround is not present . The box is complete but has suffered from some staining over the last 100 years, from I would think,  whatever liquid acid/ lead battery it used,  for which there is a cutout inside the case.On opening the case there is :-  a double coil ,  two switches/levers marked  OFF ON P S  (pulse shock?) and four screw brass terminals and a wooden top thing which can be slid in and out with a scale 0 to 10 on. These are set out on a phenolite/bakelite board, which has a crack, which my photos clearly show. The lid upon closing has a white metal handle. Size approx. 13cm square x 14.5cm high (5" 7/10ths x 52 2/10ths) weight 1.2 kilo. Please know that I have not a clue how to work it, or indeed if it works at all! May I suggest that before attempting to do anything with it  (wire your partner up to it etc.)  other than display it as a very interesting antique......... HAVE IT CHECKED/OVERHAULED BY A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN as I do know these things can give enormous electric shocks. I do not know what kind of power source it would have used but a battery of some kind and certainly not mains, you have been warned and I accept no responsibility for injuries caused by you not taking note of my advice.
