Overall this carriage is in very good condition for its age - I would place it late 1800's to very early 1900's.  The twisted spiral wood frame, the turned wood handle and the wooden base are all in very good condition - there are no cracks or repairs.  There is a beautiful carved design (see photo below), in the bottom panel.   As you can tell in the photos - the carriage can use a good cleaning and polishing; the sailscloth on the sides are in need of repair/replacement; the sailscloth for the umbrella needs to be replaced. The metal umbrella opens and closes easily; one of the rods is a slightly bent, but nothing that affects the performance.  The umbrella fits in the wrought iron pivoting mechanism on the front of the carriage.  I'm assuming that this was once attached to a base that mounted on wheels (there are holes on the bottom, but they don't go through to the top; so I'm not sure if that indicates whether this was attached to something or not).   This is a beautiful handcrafted carriage.  I provide the last photo to show what this carriage/surrey can be reconditioned to look like, the last photo is from an old price guide book for antiques. Overall outer measurements of this carriage are about 46" Length (includes the handle) x 19" Wide x 18" Height (height if you include the opened umbrella is about 44").   Just the carriage section itself measures about 37-1/2" Length x 16-3/4" Wide x 17" Height (the back is 17", the sides are about 12" height).   The overall measurement of the umbrella is about 29" Length x 31" Diameter (when the umbrella is open).
