Description: Studded with thousands of beads, on offer from our personal collection is an exciting headcrest mask from the Bamum people of the Cameroon Grasslands. Beadwork plays an important role in the creative output of Bamum & Bamileke artists. This mask is an excellent example of the artistry & highly detailed & time-consuming work involved in creating such a piece. After a layer of soft clay was applied to the surface of the carved wood mask, beads were strung & pressed into the clay before it hardened. A row of shell pieces have been set like a moustache into the clay above the upper lip. Twisted rope forms the hair and beard. Native reeds have been woven into an inverted, bowl-shaped basket to which the mask is attached so it can be worn on top of the wearer's head. The whole assemblage makes a vivid display. Despite a few imperfections, the mask is in very good overall condition, & shows good patina & age-related wear. Loaded with spirit, this engaging fellow makes a brilliant display. . . . . . . . • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Materials: wood; beads; shells;                     clay/mud; vegetal fibers Approximate dimensions 13.5" H x 10.5" W x 8" D Estimated age: 25+ years Total shipping weight: ca. 8-lbs.
