Description
The first digital Rolex was the so-called 'Jump Hour' Prince, where only the hour was shown digitally. In the series made in the early 1930s, there was no dial, just two overlapping ivory colorized discs, where the hour disc had more stylized numerals. The top of the case has a small wedge-shaped aperture for the hours and a larger sector for the minutes. Only a few of the finest watch manufacturers attempted production of this type time-piece; Breguet, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and of course, Rolex. For some reason, wristwatches with jumping hours have never been made in large quantities. Patek Philippe stopped their production on the grounds that they were not very popular. Rolex, which attempted mass production with the Prince watches also could not effect a change. Which explains why jumping hour watches are such a rarity today. Rolex made several models of the Jump-Hour; silver, stainless steel, nine carat/two-tone gold, fourteen carat either way, eighteen carat either way, and platinum. The watch I'm offering is nine-carat/two-tone gold with stepped sides and a recessed winding crown(crown is not original). The dial is matte silver with painted Arabic numerals for the minutes, a subsidiary seconds dial, and the aperture for the jump-hours is in red Arabic numerals. The hands are blued steel. It has a M.Cal. 7.5", Observatory quality, extra-prima, rhodium-plated, 15 jewels, lateral lever escapement, and monometallic balance adjusted to 6 positions movement. Other than the crown and the band, this watch is completely original, the dial has NEVER been re-finished, and the watch was last serviced by Rolex. It will be hard to find a watch like this in better condition. This very rare Rolex belongs to a friend of mine that inherited the watch. We researched it for months to learn that only a handfull of these have ever been sold at auction, priced from $25,000-$55,000. The original owner had sent the watch back to Rolex 13 years ago to have the main-spring replaced, and upon return of the watch to the owner had a letter with it from Rolex stating that this particular watch was produced less than any other of the other Prince models. Supposedly, there were only 14 of this model produced that year.Estimated prices obtained from: Classic Wristwatches Guide for Vintage Wristwatches 2008-2009
