Truman CVN-75 is the eighth Nimitz-class supercarrier of the UNited States Navy named after the 33rd President of the UNited States, Harry S. Truman. Harry S. Truman was commissioned on July 25, 1998, completing its final pre-deployment certification exercise in October 2000. Sailors and Marines of the USS Harry S. Truman completed the maiden voyage of the nation's newest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. USS Harry S. Truman Battle Group departed on November 28, 2000 and the deploymetn included extensive operations in the Mediterranean Sea, Indian Ocean and primarily the Arabian Gulf. On February 26, 2002, USS Truman ended the most successful shipyard availability ever held at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, following its first shipyard six-month maintenance period known as Planned Incremental Availability. By the end of August 2002, Truman had begun TSTA at which point it welcomed a visit by former President George H. W. Bush. On December 2002, USS Harry S. Truman deployed again for Southern Watch. Then, it participated in 2003 invasion of Iraq and returned home on May 23, 2003. In 2004, USS Harry S. Truman won the Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund Award, for being the most batlle-ready ship in the U.S. Atlantic Fleet and was also awarded the Battle "E" from 2003 to 2005. On September 1, 2005, Harry S. Truman set sail for the devastated U.S. Gulf Coast, in response to the disaster of Hurricane Katrina. USS Harry S. Truman served as the flagship for the Naval task force. In October 2005, USS Harry S. Truman returned its home port, after 5 weeks of relief efforts. In January 2006, USS Harry S. Truman entered the shipyards for a Docked Planned Incremental Avalilability. It underwent many ship upgrades and underwent preventive maintenance to repair minor weld defects originating from the initial construction of the reactor plants. On December 2006, USS Harry S. Truman left the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and is currently in a training cycle, in preparation for surge capability beginning in April 2007. On November 5, 2007, USS Harry S. Truman left Norfolk for its seven month deployment in the Mediterranean.
