Roosevelt CV-42 was the second Midway class aircraft carriers.    On October 27, 1945, Franklin Roosevelt was commissioned commanded by Captain A. Soucek.  On February 1 to 11, 1946, during Roosevelt's shakedown cruise, it was called at Rio de Janeiro to represent the United States at the inauguration of Brazilian president Eurico Gaspar Dutra.  On April and May 1946  Roosevelt participated in the 8th Fleet maneuvers off the East Coast.  On July 1947, Franklin D. Roosevelt operated off the East Coast and underwent extensive overhaul upon entering Norfolk Naval Shipyard.  On September 13, 1948, Roosevelt sailed from Norfolk for a second duty with the Mediterranean forces.  In 1950, Roosevelt became the first carrier to take nuclear weapons to sea.  In September and October 1952, Roosevelt participated in Operation Mainbrace.  On January 7, 1954, Roosevelt underwent another extensive reconstruction.  In July 1957, Roosevelt sailed for the first of three consecutive 6th Fleet deployments.  On October 24, 1958, Roosevelt supported USS Kleinsmith in the evacuation of 56 American citizens and three foreign nationals during the height of the Cuban revolution.  From August 1966 to January 1967, Roosevelt made its only deployment in the Southeast Asia.  Roosevelt received one battle star for its service in Vietnam.  In January 1968, Virna Lisi, an Italian actress, was invited by Roosevelt's crew to participate in the ship's 22nd birthday celebrations, wherein Lisi helped prepare 5,000 T-bone steaks at a large cook-out staged on the flight deck.   By 1970, Roosevelt was in poor condition and it was the least modern and least capable compared to Midway and Coral Sea.  The Navy decided to decommission Roosevelt when the second Nimitz class carrier, Dwight D. Eisenhower entered service in 1977.  On April 1977, Roosevelt had completed its final cruise.  On September 30, 1977, Roosevelt was decommissioned and was stricken from the Navy list the following day.    Model #: MBACFDR14 Scale: 1/800 Length: 19 Width: 9 Height: 9 Material Used: Mahogany Wood   Modelworks: Hand-crafted Museum Quality Display Ship Models Modelworks has been producing the world’s finest collection of hand-made and hand-painted model ships for over 20 years.
