Eisenhower (CVN-69) named after the thirty-fourth President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, is the second of 10 Nimitz-class supercarriers in the United States Navy. USS Dwight Eisenhower has completed eight Mediterranean deployments. In 1990, Eisenhower completed its sixth Mediterranean Sea deployment. The deployment became a commemorative event celebrating the 100th anniversary of the late president's birth, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Centennial. Eisenhower became the first carrier to conduct sustained operations in the Red Sea and it was the second nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to transit the Suez Canal. In the Iraqi invasion of Saudi Arabia, the carrier served as a ready striking force and participated in maritime interception operations in support of a United National embargo against Iraq. On September 26, 1991, after completion of extensive shipyard period and work ups, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower deployed to the Arabian Gulf for the multi-national operations with coalition forces in support of Operation Desert Storm. Eisenhower returned to Norfolk on April 2, 1992. On January 6, 1993, the aircraft carrier underwent overhaul and conversion in Norfolk Naval Shipyard an it returned to the fleet on November 12. In September 1994, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division again made history with the concept of "adaptive force packaging." CVN 69 departed for a six-month deployment in support of Operations Southern Watch and Deny Flight. The ship returned to Newport News Shipbuilding on July 17, 1995 for an 18-month complex overhaul, which was completed on January 27, 1997. On June 10, 1998, the ship departed for its 10th deployment on June 10, 1998 and returned on December. After eight months of intensive work-up schedule, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Battlegroup headed to sea on February 19, 2000 for the first Mediterranean deployment of the year 2000. The carrier crew began preparation for the deployment within four days of sea trials in June. On August 18, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower returned to Norfolk after a six-month deployment. On January 25, 2005, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower pulled to Naval Station Norfolk after a three and a half year complex overhaul and refueling at Newport News Shipbuilding. On October 3, 2006, Dwight D. Eisenhower returned to sea as the flagship of Rear Admiral Allen G. Meyers, commanding Carrier Strike Group 8. On January 8, 2007, a U.S. AC-130 gunship was dispatched to target Al-Qaeda operatives in Somalia. The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower was deployed in the Indian Ocean to provide air cover for the operation and to evacuate downed airmen and other casualties. In March 2007, Dwight D. Eisenhower began battle group exercises off the Iranian coastline. In April 2007, the USS Nimitz relieved the USS Eisenhower, which will assume the air support missions in the Iraqi theatre. In May 2007, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower is visible near the city of Lisbon in Portugal.
