Bound in black paper-mache covers esigned to look like carved ebony but in raelity produced by pouring plaster into a mould. Only about a dozen boks wereproduced with this binding. The binding was based on onecarved in ivory in the 12th Century and has medallions of the principal miracles intertwined with ornate decorations. The front and rear cover are identical. The book is exuberantly illustrated using chromolithographyon 32 pagesalternating between hat bright colours and cool grisaille pages subtly tinted with various shades,the wohle combining to make both a magnificent tribute to Medieval illustration and to the then new and novel technique of chromolithography.
