Description
Tellurian, Maple Arm Trippensee Planetarium Company, Michigan: c. 1910-1940No label (as issued) 14 inches high; 21 inches long Description: For your consideration is an antique geared tellurian by the Trippensee Planetarium Company, with a terrestrial globe rotating at the end of a maple arm, and with a black-and-white painted wood representation of the moon revolving the earth, both revolving around a central brass sphere representing the sun, and with a black-and-white painted wood representation of Venus also revolving the sun. The entire assembly is mounted on a turned maple central standard, set on a round, stepped and weighted brass base, with an inset circular zodiac dial.  This model has a small, round compass inset on the arm.  When turned by hand by a metal post under the arm, the earth rotates, and the earth, moon and Venus revolve. The Trippensee Planetarium is a demonstration model of the movement of the earth, moon and Venus relative to each other and to the sun. It shows such phenomena as the succession of seasons, and solar and lunar eclipses. The tellurian is similar to other planetary models such as the orrey. This original model, patented in 1908 has a maple arm and central standard.  Models produced circa second quarter of the 20th century have ebonized arms and central standards.  Models made after World War II models are of Bakelite or plastic.Condition: This tellurian is in good working condition. Given the age of this antique planetary model there are certain signs of typical wear and usage.  Six indentations have been noted on brass sphere Sun and some flaking paint on Moon and Venus.  Cleanly restored split on maple arm which does not impede function. The original three-inch terrestrial globe was replaced with a 2" wood globe painted solid white by a previous owner - paint residue at base of replacement globe and clearly visible in photographs.  Underside of base painted dark green and fitted with four felt rounds.  Trippensee is still in business, now owned by Science First. Replacement parts, such as chains and gears, are often available for their current line as well as for older models. For more information, contact them directly. Tellurians with their original three-inch terrestrial globes in good condition sell in the $5,000. - $6.000. range at the George Glazer Gallery in New York.
