The plan has been published in many editions since then, including composites of the entire map as well as in books. I believe this section was printed by the Louvre in 1966, but I cannot confirm it. It is a very high quality printing. This section is Louvre-Palais Royal-Tuileries. It measures approximately the same size as the original at 22.75 inches tall x 30.75 inches wide including margins. Printed in the left lower margin is Plan de Turgot and in the right lower margin Editions Les Yeux Ouverts. It is printed on thick woven beige paper with black ink. The printed area is in good condition with numerous marginal tears with a few repaired into the image. There are also handling creases particularly in the margins and dog eared corners. The image area will frame very well. Check my store for another section of the map, the Quarter Latin-Saint Germain Des Pres. About Plan de Turgot - Information from Gurari Collections. One of the most ambitious and beautiful works of urban cartography ever produced. The surveying and rendering was done by Louis Bretez, and the engraving by Claud Lucas. The calligraphy was done by the writing master Aubin. Commissioned by Turgot, Prevot de Marchands of Paris and effectively the city's administrator. The project took five years to complete. A permit was issued to Bretez to enter every building in the city for the purpose of producing the numerous sketches from which the plan was composed. Every buildings exterior has each window shown, while, every garden has all the trees depicted with shade and shadow. This magnificent plan of Paris, the Turgot/Bretez is especially valuable for its detailed depiction of the city's structures, including civic buildings, churches, and even private houses with their courts and gardens. The plan is not oriented to the north, which was the convention, but to the east so that the viewer can see the portals of the city's numerous churches, which face the west. The best representation of Paris in its time, the plan is of considerable documentary value to historians and archeologists today. In addition to its huge decorative appeal, Turgot's celebrated plan of Paris is important for providing a remarkably detailed snapshot of the pre-Haussman city. Representing its great churches, public buildings and monuments, the plan also offers a sense of the daily life of the 18th-century metropolis: A flotilla of small working boats crowds the Seine; windmills dot the surprisingly rural landscape of fields, farms and orchards which surrounds the compact built-up area, a landscape soon to disappear under later 18th- and 19th-century expansion. Attention to detail is everywhere remarkable: not a tree, window, turret or chimney is omitted. Names have changed, or their derivations are revealed: the modern Place des Vosges is here the Place Royale.
