We are very pleased to have the opportunity to present, for your consideration, this beautiful and Superb Burl Walnut Victorian Aesthetic Period Secretary Desk Bookcase with Spindle Gallery and Carved Crown (Circa: 1880). This fine quality Victorian Secretary Desk appears to be wearing its original finish, weighs approximately 275 pounds, and measures 84 1/2" height (from the floor to the top of the crown), 61" in width (crown), 56 1/2" in width (body) and 22" in depth.  The space from the floor to the underside of the pull-out writing surface measures 29 1/2" in height.  This beautiful Burl Walnut Victorian Aesthetic Period Secretary Desk Bookcase is in excellent condition for its age, has many wonderful details and is just waiting for its place of prominence in your home!   The top of the Secretary portion of this piece is graced with a lovely, superbly carved acanthus leaf wave crown with stylized pagoda finials.  An elegant finely turned elongated spool spindle gallery adorns the top of the Bookcase side of this piece.  This top space would be a perfect area to display a vase, a treasured bronze or other special art piece. The glass on the doors appears to be original and ample storage is found on the large adjustable fluted front shelf on the Secretary side and on the three smaller adjustable fluted shelves on the Bookcase side.  Intact locks and beautiful brass key escutcheons are found on the glass doors and a working tasseled key is included.  A very ornate drop front desk door, dressed with beautiful moulding and luscious burl panels is found on the Secretary side.  This beautiful door opens to reveal a fabulous interior compartment that consists of six banded, inlaid, burl-front interior drawers, eight small pigeon-hole cubbies and one large center cubbie with a very ornately carved valance.  The ample writing surface has green felt and measures 32 7/8" wide by 17 3/4" deep.  Plentiful storage is found in the three dovetailed, burl-paneled drawers on the Secretary side and in the one dovetailed, burl-paneled drawer on the bookcase side.  Each of these beautiful drawers are dressed with moulding, luscious burl panels, original brass key escutcheons, and absolutely fabulous brass pulls with ornate rose, foliate and scroll designs that are completely indicative of the finest Victorian Aesthetic Period design.  Intact locks are found in these drawers, but we do not have a key for them.  Finally, brass castors on the feet of this gorgeous Walnut Victorian Aesthetic Period Secretary Desk Bookcase with Spindle Gallery and Carved Crown provide ease of movement.   The winning bidder will be delighted to find hand-written records, regarding provenance of this magnificent piece, which are found on the backs and sides of  some of the banded inlaid burl-front interior drawers.  Also found on the back of one of the interior drawers is a paper label that reads "From the Mahan Company, 26 Pikes Peak Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado".  We do not know if this company was the original retailer of this fine piece or if they manufactured it.  In any case, it is absolutely fantastic!  We have never had the opportunity to own a piece quite like this, but we  know that it is very special and would be quite beautiful in the home or office of the distinguished collector of Walnut Aesthetic Period Victoriana!   Novice antique collectors should be aware that any antique over 100 years old will have some type(s) of slight or minor imperfections or marks of character.  It is exactly these time-acquired features that intrigue collectors to ponder about how the piece must have been used and by whom.  Such marks of use and character only add to the authenticity, charm, and desirability of the piece.   Buyer pays all packing, shipping, and insurance fees and is responsible for making their shipping arrangements.
