A pair of matching antique Art Nouveau silk cutwork pelmets, all beautifully hand-stitched on original Art Nouveau silk. I believe them to be English. These date from 1900 are made from strong ribbed green  silk which is over-stitched in a self coloured Art Nouveau design with ivory silk cutwork decoration hand-sewn onto the pelmet to create an overlaid design, again in an Art Nouveau figuring. There is hessian stiffening the inside of the pelmet and gold silk backing. There is an original red wool and green silk booble tassled braid which is 3" overall. The condition is quite good considering the age, although where the delicate cutwork silk has been overlaid there is a little dark staining which may be glue or where the green dye has worked through to the ivory over the years and the bobble braid has become detached in a couple of places and there are a few missing bobbles inevitably. There are a few slight scuff marks on the backing fabric, so they may need a dry clean - but do not wash with water as green dye can be unstable, like reds. It is fab to have a matching original pair for a drawing room or dining room, to dress up a window and the green is a lovely leaf green, so would blend with so many other colours, they are designed to fit a 5 foot to 6 foot window with returns. The dimensions are: 6 foot 4 inches across. The pelmet drops a maximum of 24 inches with a slight curving across the centre. They weigh around 2 kg. The photos show the two together but the lower one has been hung over a rail, so the detail is not really showing the way I would like, but at least you can read them together and see how well the green and red works together to give a very formal effect. Please remember with vintage or antique textiles they are not perfect (unless I happen to mention they are!) so please do not expect that (believe me some people do!).
