Description
A Blue and White Porcelain Chinese Tea Bowl, recovered from the Ca Mau shipwreck (1730). The tea bowl measures 2 1/2 inches across the top, and stands 1 1/2 inches tall. The Ca Mau shipwreck was first discovered by fishermen off the coast of southern Vietnam in 1998. Excavations were carried out during 1998-1999 under the supervision of a team led by the National Museum of Vietnamese History. It is believed that the shipwreck was that of a ship involved in trading Chinese ceramics and that the ship was en route from China to Europe and carried Chinese ceramics dated to the Yongzheng period (1723-1735) made by kilns in provinces of Jiangxi, Fujian and Guangdong. The ship carried some thin porcelain blue and white tea bowls and saucers. The ship was identified as the Ca Mau.
