Remember that you can click any image for a supersized picture. This remarkable group of three name plaques or bow badges are truly rare and significant relics of America's cup and Cowes week  history . Each oval plaque measures approximately 6-3/4" by 6-0", and they are cast in bronze with copper sheet plates. They are absolutely genuine, and on close inspection most fascinating. The Shamrock V badge  is from the gig or tender to probably the most famous and first British J class yacht. Notice that the club burgee is that of the Royal Ulster Yacht Club , the club under which Sir Thomas Lipton had previously challenged for the America's Cup. The second bow badge is from the port side gig of Lipton's palatial steam yacht Erin, and significantly, the club burgee is that of The Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes , the club that for years blackballed Lipton's application for membership on the grounds that he was a working class grocer! He was finally voted a member, but for Cowes Week 1931, he tauntingly moored S.Y. Erin and Shamrock before the Royal Yacht Squadron, and flew the club's burgees for all to see, but  he did not step foot within the hallowed club for the entire week, and indeed he never did visit as he died just a few months later.  So here you have the very bow badges from Lipton's Shamrock V gig and that of S.Y. Erin  from Cowes Week 1931. The third bow badge seemed at first unassociated and baffled me initially, but a little research has revealed that this is S.Y.Albion was the former name of Thomas Lipton's S.Y. Erin (his second of that name) and the burgee is that of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, so I assume that the previous owner was a member there. How these three bow badges have stayed together for so long only to turn up in a box of junk at a local auction is a mystery.
