CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITYAdditional Information: This well carved helmet -mask is intriguing as it has similarities to a number of different peoples living in Ivory Coast and Mali; the Senufo or Bamana for example. But it is not sufficiently specific in its form to be identified to an initiation or masking group where it would be used. The treatment of the nose and mouth is close to that of the Bamana sculpture.  The mask has some association with the Senufo in their relationship to Senufo depiction of the the ancestor on the top. Also, the elaborate incised pattern are typpcal to the senufo. This mask is very close to the Senufo helmet masks known as "trophy Cap" awarded to a winner of a racing contest among young men . The iconography of the animal horn on the forehead and the carved head on the top of the head are common symbolic motifs through out the Western Sudan and the hard darkened overall finish is also known.  The crosshatching of the eyes are also interesting but difficult to place. It is an interesting mask and one that is known in broad definition to the Sudan but needs closer study to place it with a specific people.  **041293** All content, including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc., 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers!
