IMPORTANT SCOTTISH GEORGE IV STERLING SILVER TEA SERVICE; ELEGANT RAISED URN DESIGN; PARTIAL "PETAL" FLUTED; ANTHEMION CAP, SWIRLING ACANTHUS MOUNT SPOUT; LEAF WRAP BIFURCATED LEAF AND SHELL HANDLES; ROBERT GRAY & SON, GLASGOW, 1821; NEAR PRISTINE; NEVER MONOGRAMMED; 58 OUNCES We are exceptionally pleased to offer this pristine, museum worthy Scottish George IV sterling silver tea service. From one of the most important Glasgow firms of its time, Robert Gray & Son. Date marked 1821. The firm was listed from 1821-1847. Known for silver of creative design and superb finish detail. Walter Brown (June 2006) writes that Gray & Son crafted "....some of the finest British silver of the period". From our personal collection of over thirty years. Begrudingly offered on Ebay. This breathtaking tea service hand crafted in classic raised urn design. A similar c1815 Paul Storr service is illustrated in Waldron (page 295). Elegant, tapering "petal" fluted lower body. Sharp cut shoulder, with raised petal fluted decoration. Conforming petal fluting adorns the stepped circular base. Wide overflow gadrooned rims. Beautifully cast leaf wrap, reeded vine form handles to cream pitcher and sugar bowl. Richly detailed bifurcated leaf form terminals above. Boldly modelled spread shell joins below. The teapot with well formed, recessed domed cover. Recessed hinging in fine state. Cover topped with classic raised pomegranate finial. Rising above satin chased ruffled and layered leaf surround. Gorgeous. Teapot with regal anthemion and banded vine cap, swirling acanthus spout. One fine textured ground. Well cast, ruffled acanthus cap C-scroll handle. Chased leaf form terminals. The lower terminal in trifurcated leaf design. The set never monogrammed. This fine George IV Scottish sterling silver cream pitcher 6 inches handle to spout 4 1/2 inches tall, and and it weighs 11 ounces. The sugar bowl is 7 inches handle to handle and 4 3/4 tall, and weighs 15 ounces. The teapot is 10 3/4 inches handle to spout and 6 1/2 inches tall and it weighs 32 ounces. The set hand crafted in exceptionally thick, heavy guage sterling, and it weighs 58 ounces. Excellent condition. Near pristine. Appears little, if ever used. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. The set stands perfectly firm on table or sideboard. Interior of teapot free of discoloration. Handle secure, and with original ivory heat stops. The elegant gadroon borders, acanthus and anthemion decoration, leaf and shell handles and raised pomegranate finial retain their original crisp, vibrant hand chased detail. Original brilliant gold wash to interior of cream pitcher and sugar. Sugar with few faint surface lines, barely discernible. Well struck hallmarks to base rims, as shown. For the discerning collector of the finest Georgian period Scottish sterling. A museum worthy, 1821 George IV Scottish sterling silver bifurcated leaf and shell handled tea service.
