Description, content and further information: The edition at hand contains Hartmann Schopper's beautifully illustrated Latin version of the famous Low German fable Reyneke de Vos. Probably one of the most influential and famous fable in the history of European literature. Over 57 beautiful woodcuts vividly illustrate the story of the trickster Reynard the Fox. Made by the famous Swiss artist Jost Amman (1539–1591) and the well-known German engraver Vergil Solis (1514-1562) they impressively depict different scenes of the story. Several images show Noble, the lion king holding counsel with various other animals like bears, sheep and cocks whereas one woodcut wonderfully illustrates the famous fight between Reynard and Isengrin the wolf. The woodcuts are in fabulous condition and render this edition of Reynard the Fox into a little work of art beautifully demonstrating the craft of 16th century book illustration. The fable of the clever fox Reynard can be traced back to the Greek author Aesop (620-560) and was very popular in the Middle Ages. Hans van Ghetelen (1480-1528) published the first Low German version Reyneke de Vos in Rostock which quickly spread throughout the Baltic area and is considered the model for all later versions of the story. In 1544 Michael Beuther (1522-1587) translated the fable into High German. His story formed the basis of the version at hand which was latinised by Hartmann Schopper (c. 1542-1595) and printed for the first time in 1567. Schopper's translation helped the fable to spread outside the German language area. "Each chapter of the poem is written in iambic verses; »Commentaria« were added to each chapter, mostly moral observations beginning with »Observa ex hoc capite«; each chapter is introduced by an »Argumentum« in distich." (ADB Bd. 32, S. 372) Only very little is known of Hartmann Schopper. In 1562 he started translating Reynard the Fox but had to delay his work as he was drafted into the imperial army to fight the Turks in Hungary. In 1566 he returned to Frankfurt and was finally able to finish the story. As he was on good terms with Sigmund Feyerabend, one of the most important publishers of the 16th century, Schopper was able to release his latinised version for the first time in 1567. The edition at hand is the very impressive 5th edition from 1595. Auflage aus dem Jahre 1595. Bei Reineke Fuchs handelt es sich um die vermutlich einflussreichste und berühmteste Fabel der europäischen Literaturgeschichte. Die insgesamt 57 in dem Werk enthaltenen Holzschnitte wurden von dem berühmten Illustrator Jost Amman sowie vom ebenfalls recht bekannten Kupferstecher Virgil Solis angefertigt. Die sehr schönen Schnitte illustrieren verschiedene Szenen der Fabel. So ist auf vielen Motiven der Löwe als der "König der Tiere" abgebildet, wie er sich mit anderen Tieren, unter anderem Bären, Schafen und Hähnen berät. Die Fabel vom schlauen Fuchs Reineke war bereits im Mittelalter sehr verbreitet und wurde in vielen Varianten erzählt. Hans van Ghetelen (vor 1480-1528) veröffentliche 1498 in Rostock einen ersten niederdeutschen Druck von Reyneke de Vos, der in den folgenden Jahren vor allem im Ostseeraum eine rasche Verbreitung fand und Grundlage für alle weiteren Bearbeitungen des Stoffes wurde. Im Jahre 1544 erschien in Frankfurt eine Übertragung der Fabel ins Hochdeutsche, die vermutlich von Michael Beuther (1522-1587) besorgt wurde. Nach der Vorlage dieser Übersetzung schuf Hartmann Schopper (ca. 1542-nach 1595) seine hier vorliegende lateinische Version der Fabel, die zuerst 1567 gedruckt wurde. Um 1562 begann er mit der Übersetzung der Fabel, konnte das Werk jedoch vorerst nicht beenden, da er Soldat im kaiserlichen Heer wurde und in Ungarn gegen die Türken kämpfte. Um das Jahr 1566 herum kehrte er nach Frankfurt zurück und vollendete hier sein Werk, welches er Kaiser Maximilian widmete. Da er schon zu einem früheren Zeitpunkt Bekanntschaft mit Sigmund Feyerabend, einem der bedeutendsten Drucker und Verleger des 16.
