Description
A needle case of tapering design, typical for Dutch needle cases made between 1750-1820. This needle case has been made in the Netherlands about 1780. There is a hallmark but it is too faint to decipher. The lid features three angel faces, between wings and flowers. The case is decorated with alternating embossed and smooth panels. There are four sections of these panels in the case. The upper section has small angel faces as well. Needle cases in this style have a flat section at the thop that could be used as a seal. This needle case has a monogram engraved: "A.B." At the backside of this flat top you see scratches in the shape of IIIV. These are touch marks, made by the assay office, when testing silver items. The bottom shows the same touch marks. The needle case is 3 5/8" long, 11/16" wide; the weight is 19.3 gram. The condition is excellent. There is one hardly visible dent near the opening of the case and a small hole in the small round bottom. The case screws together snugly. For similar needle cases see Kay Sullivan, Needlework tools and Accessories, page 82-83. * * * * * From now on I am listing my antique, pre-1930, sewing items in this new Ebay category, Antiques > Sewing (Pre-1930).
