Description
SPECTACULAR 19TH-CENTURY MAP OF UNITED STATES On offer is a fascinating early map of pre-Civil war United States originally published in the folio edition of Walter Blackie's Imperial Atlas of Modern Geography ("An extensive series of maps, embracing the most recent discoveries and the latest political divisions of territory in all parts of the world. Compiled and engraved from the most authentic sources") in 1860 in London. Of particular interest are the borders of the western territories and a Texas that includes Oklahoma and the Indian Territories of the time. One of the finer example of 19th century British cartography, Blackie's maps were engraved by Joseph Lowry, George Bartholomew and Edward Weller. The map is hand-colored in outline and measures 54cm by 37cm (21in by 14.5in), and includes as much topographical detail as was known at the time along with political divisions, major urban areas and coastal specifications. The firm that later came to be known as Blackie & Son was founded in 1809 by John Blackie Sr., Archibald Fullerton and William Somerville in Glasgow, Scotland. By 1811, the firm was already beginning to publish its own books and in 1819, Blackie expanded the scope of the business into printing. In 1831, John Blackie Jr. joined his father in the business and the firm was renamed Blackie & Son. Six years later, it was renamed yet again to W G Blackie & Co. to accommodate Walter Graham Blackie (1816-1906), the second son of John Blackie Sr. This map was engraved and published under the direction of Walter Blackie. This is an original document on heavy stock, and a fascinating glimpse into U.S. history at that.
