SONGYE FETISH FIGURE USED TO PROTECT VILLAGE AGAINST CHICKEN POX - ZAIRE "Very large figures are community-owned among the Songye. They are used principally in ceremonies to promote fertility, vanquish enemies, or protect the village. Smaller figures used similarly may be owned by individuals to empower them, substances invested with magical properties are added to the sculptures. These materials may include horns,skins,teeth, hair, beads, tacks, and cloth." Pg 465 African Art in American Collections. This sculpture is from a PRIVATE AMERICAN COLLECTION. Mid 20th Century.
