An extremely striking design, evocative of the period. It's signed R. Merkelbach Grenzhausen in the firm's circular factory motif on the underside, along with the model number 1730 and the initial D. This piece is a fantastic expression of Jugendstil. The German manifestation of Art Nouveau was inspired not only by Art Nouveau as it was being expressed in France and Belgium, but also by the reforming ideals of John Ruskin and William Morris. Munich-based Riemerschmid exemplified this influence as much as any of his peers and his elegant and standardised decoration and forms went on exert considerable influence on the Modern Movement and the Bauhaus. Size: About 12 cms (4.75 inches) in height and 13.5 cms (5.25 inches) in diameter. Condition: Excellent, with only minor signs of consistent with age and use and no damages or signs of restoration.  Literature: See Richard Riemerschmid, From Art Nouveau to the Werkbund, Prestel, 1982, for an illustration of this item. At the time of writing I have a cmpore stunning Riemerschmid items available in separate listings.  © Text and photographs by room_606.
