Description
Retouched Levallois Point, Mousterian Famous Provenance DescriptionType: laterally retouched Levallois pointPaleolithic Period, Industry: Middle Paleolithic: Mousterian / Mousterian in Acheulian Tradition (MAT)Dating: the particular site: ca. 55.000- 40.000 B.C Description: Size: length 6,2 cm, weight 23 grams Shape, Retouch: a thin very asymmetrical Levallois point with excellent, very fine faceted platform remnant. Both lateral edges present a continuous retouch from the medial part up to the tip. Although this point certainly was not used as spear point (due to its irregular shape), it has the typical use-scar of points: the very end of the tip (2mm) is broken off. It is an old break with the same color/ patination as the rest of the tool. The straight part of the right edge has an interesting, nicely retouch nose (sorry, no detailed picture), but quite well visible in the 4th one. Raw-material: marbled gray flint Preservation: very well, no modern damages. Some matrix of the original site layer still adheres to the exterior side. A small piece of flint also adheres to the exterior side. It can be removed with acid, but we think it is a fine additional proof of authenticity Origin, Site: Le Moustier, the most famous Mousterian site in France We have been listing more interesting paleolithic artifacts, please have a look!
