Description
From Steve Kane Quilts and Folk Art - A COLLECTOR'S QUILT "IRISH CHAIN with Two Borders" Large size: approx. 76 inches by 82 inches. All Cottons. Made about 1870-85 in PENNSYLVANIA. Very good condition, with random spots and stains. Window pane plaid Backing. "High Style" Quilts of the mid-Nineteenth Century were composed of red, white and green fabrics in floral patterns such as "Rose of Sharon," "Whig Rose" or "Princess Feather." As the century progressed these pictorial patterns gave way to the geometricly constructed mosaic block quilts of the Arts & Crafts Movement. This IRISH CHAIN uses those high style colors of red, white and green in an architectonic pattern that is indicative of the several aesthetic fashions of the times. The solid RED and WHITE patches are arranged in bold diagonals that traverse the GREEN PRINT background from "Nine Patch" to "Nine Patch." This central field is enclosed in two Borders - one in solid Red and the other Red and Green Print Triangles on White in a "Sawtooth" pattern. The resemblance to garden design, of paths on lawn, is carried through to the picket fence-like Sawtooth Border. There are two different Green Prints, each with small black foulards, that are virtually indistinguishable. The BACKING is a window pane plaid on a tan ground, as can be seen in the upturned edge of the detail photo. There are age spots and random blemishes consistent with a quilt of this age, but no rips or tears. There is enough batting to give this quilt a good feel that would make it a wonderful bed covering. The stylish combination of colors make this a festive item all year long. THE ANTIQUE AMERICAN QUILT is as uniquely American as Jazz, the Blues, or the Broadway Musical. A bed or a wall covered with an antique handmade quilt is the expression of baronial comfort as splendid as any found in castle or palazzo. Whether in townhouse or farmhouse these utilitarian and artistic textiles were produced in styles as diverse as couture and country in fine silks and scrap cottons. The quilting of a pieced -together design on a base fabric to be used as a bedcovering was an achievement of American independence and self-expression that was taken up from Baltimore to the Hawaiian Islands. Today these treasures will enliven and complement every decor. In color and texture quilts are companions of modern finishes and materials. In scale the aesthetic daring of the Quiltmaker rivaled that of the Muralist. It was not surprising then that so much of the American home was given to the display of quilts, to their production, and thankfully to their preservation. Q. WHAT SHOULD I SPEND ON A QUILT? A. 10% to 15% of the cost of your motor vehicle(s) can be a good guideline amount. Ot perhaps consider the cost of your clothing from head to toe on an average day. Q. WHICH QUILT SHOULD I CHOOSE? A. Once the budget is established, determine the purpose of the quilt. If for display, spend the entire amount for one beautiful quilt. If for the bed, consider buying two quilts with the funds perhaps choosing one fine and one more utilitarian quilt, or a cotton and a wool quilt to cover needs of seasonal temperature change. In the cool of air conditioning or the cold of a winter night, a second quilt will produce layered warmth and comfort.
