Description
Painted and parcel-gilt onyx top table; rectangular, white/cream onyx top table; carved frieze; foliate arabesques consisting of swans centering on an urn; the end supports in the form of carved winged monopodiea terminating in lion-paw feet; backed by a beveled rectangular mirror surrounded by a carved panel; all raised on a U-shaped with petal molding; painted gray-green with gilt decoration. Comparables/history: ๏Similar to a console by Lemarchand at the Musee du chateau de Malmaison, which shows winged sphinx monopodiae (see Grandjean, Empire Furniture.) The common inspiration seems to be drawings in the serial Recueil de décorations intérieures, which premiered in 1801 and was issued as a complete volume in 1812, by Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine, premier designers of the Empire style. ๏SEE: Sotheby’s is auctioning two similar style consoles on 22 Oct. 2008, one in NY, one in Paris (“Empire style gilt-bronze mounted mahogany and opera fantastico marble console, First quarter 20th century, in the manner of François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter, 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture, Ceramics, Silver and Works of Art, Sale N08480, Session 1 | 22 Oct 08 10:00 AM, New York, estimated $30,000-50,000). See also Paris auction, LOT 135 , TABLE CONSOLE EN ACAJOU, BOIS PATINÉ ET DORÉ D'ÉPOQUE EMPIRE [A MAHOGANY, PATINATED AND GILTWOOD CONSOLE TABLE, EMPIRE], 6,000—8,000 EUR.) There was a similar piece in the collection of Gianni Versace, “an-empire-style-ormolu patinated-bronze-and-marble” (sold for $96,000 in 2001). ๏L 62.5” x W 17.75” x H37.75 ๏Purchased by my husband and me at a catalogued auction (Sloan’s auctions, lot 324, 7/31/1999, DC. Illustrated in catalogue.) ๏Condition: There is a crack in the onyx top. Otherwise, excellent ๏Appraised replacement value for insurance purposes, Oct. 2007: $30,000.
