The first kiosks were installed in 1936.The kiosks cast iron construction was produced in one of five foundry's in the United Kingdom. Most kiosk doors are made from teakwood, with cast iron glazing frames. Some 60,000 were erected over a thirty year span, numbers have quickly diminished since the 1980's. Kiosks were not always painted red, in areas of particular natural beauty, Dark Battleship Grey was introduced with their glazing bars kept red. The royal 'crown motif' from the Post Office crest was changed to the 'St Edward's' Crown in 1953 with the new monarch (Queen Elizabeth II)Thousands of K6's were smashed in the initial decommissioned year. *****'Kiosks are typical of what makes our England unique, they are part of our heritage'. Over recent years, hundreds have been sent all over the world. Many K6 kiosks owned and operated by BT, are now classed 'GRADE 2' LISTINGS and cannot be removed from site.
