Sandblasting removes all traces of paint and rust. The kiosk is then transported back to our workshops, thoroughly checked for any damage, repaired by specialist welders if so required, degreased, and placed in our 'spray booth'.Minor casting inperfections are filled, all external joints are sealed, prior to three generous coats of high build primer being applied by spraygun. After a duration, the kiosk is sanded, rechecked and degreased, before three coats of 'Post Office Red' Two Pack paint are added by spraygun. The kiosks new paint finish is then allowed to harden. 'Gold 'pearl' is applied by hand to the four crowns. Previously removed ancillary components are checked and cleaned before being replaced.New brass hinges screws and leather retaining straps are installed. The kiosk is then reglazed in safety glass. (held in place by silicon sealer for easy replacement) The four glass TELEPHONE transoms are new items. The internal light has been rewired to 240v.The aforementioned telephone box would become available Mid/late October 2008. Photographs depict one of our restored kiosks recently sold via eBay. The first kiosks were installed in 1936.The kiosks cast iron construction was produced in one of five foundry's in the United Kingdom. Most kiosk doors are made from teakwood, with cast iron glazing frames. Some 60,000 were erected over a thirty year span, numbers have quickly diminished since the 1980's. Kiosks were not always painted red, in areas of particular natural beauty, Dark Battleship Grey was introduced with their glazing bars kept red. The royal 'crown motif' from the Post Office crest was changed to the 'St Edward's' Crown in 1953 with the new monarch (Queen Elizabeth II)Thousands of K6's were smashed in the initial decommissioned year. *****'Kiosks are typical of what makes our England unique, they are part of our heritage'. Over recent years, hundreds have been sent all over the world. Many K6 kiosks owned and operated by BT, are now classed 'GRADE 2' LISTINGS and cannot be removed from site.
