Description
Sewing Machine enthusiasts…Museums or Historical Sewing Machine Associations ………………………… Heads Up!!! Click Link to see history of Eldredge Sewing Machines: National Sewing Machine We have for auction today a rare century-old antique B. Eldredge Sewing Machine Company/ National Sewing Machine Company Automatic “Silent Chain Stitcher Sewing Machine” c. 1900-1915; exceptionally preserved for an over century-old machine; perfect for museum or historical relic society preservation. Excellent Condition. Wood Refinished sometime in its history. Working Condition. Table Dimensions: 28"High x 41.5" wide (with leaf extended) x  "Depth 16 1/2" not including actual Sewing Machine Dimensions: 8 3/4"H x 10 1/4" wide; Sewing Machine is fixed to the table. Weight: unknown; (don't have a scale large enough to weigh this heavy cast iron beauty). There are three 1" round inserts on the table surface.  I believe they are decorative; but one is missing. Email: morettiglas@earthlink.net for more pictures.  The Smithsonian website writes about these historical relics.... I actually am in possession of one.  How cool is that. This rare c. 1900-1915 Eldredge Automatic Chain Stitcher sewing Machine is beautifully gilded/stenciled with a maple leaf garland design overall. The B. Eldredge Sewing Machine Company had its home office in Chicago Illinois from 1860-1886 and a subsidiary in Belvidere, Illinois from 1886-1890. The Eldredge Sewing Machine Co. consolidated with the June Mfg. Company in 1890 to form the “National Sewing Machine Company”.  There is a gold tone brass medallion at the base of the sewing machine which reads: Eldredge Automatic” with an emblem of an “Eagle”. I am not a seamstress, nor an expert on sewing machines, but the mechanisms seem to be fully operational. The tiger wood finish has obviously been refinished at some point in its history. The table has a drop leaf extension to the left, which is lifted and latched into place when sewing.  This historic model is a foot powered treadle machine with a beautiful cast iron butterfly pedal attached to other very ornate cast iron workings that sews chain stitch. It uses only a single source of thread and utilizes a lower looper. The design of the machine seems to be very similar to a Wilson & Gibbs model of an earlier period. I am wondering if Wilson & Gibbs may have sold National its patent rights sometime in its history. The sewing machine comes complete with 1) cast iron and tiger wood treadle stand; 2) attached drop leaf to the left;  3)three drawers; 4) cast iron butterfly pedal and other cast iron workings, 5) beautiful tiger wood bentwood cover and 6) original instruction manual, entitled “Instructions for Operation.  The B. Eldredge Automatic Silent Sewing Machine; Home Office, Belvidere, ILL. New York Office, 290 Broadway; Chicago Office, 320 W. Madison Street; Manufactured by the National Sewing Machine Co.”. (The manual is missing the last page, I believe. The rest of the pages are there; although some pages of the manual are loose due to age).  The manual is very informative and gives basic information, (i.e. description of parts and where the parts are located; cleaning, oiling, trouble shooting information and detailed and illustrated pictures; as well as a replacement parts list (I glanced at this list and was amazed to see that replacement parts in that era started at $.02 to $3.00 (being the highest priced part); times have certainly changed; haven’t they?.  Any further input from my fellow sewing machine collectors will be posted.  Don’t miss your chance to own this very rare offering.  LOCAL PICK UP ONLY OR YOU MAY ARRANGE FOR YOUR OWN CRATING AND SHIPPING.   ITEM IS LOCATED 66 miles North of Orlando, Florida.
