Description
hollow_cut Store RARE AMERICAN CARTOUCHE SAMPLER "ON FRIENDSHIP" QUAKER? Search Stunning early 19th century American sampler completed by H Bradshaw in 1813. A very rare & unusual format, typically only seen on a few Quaker samplers, with a large vining central cartouche containing the verse “On Friendfhip” (“On Friendship”) and signed H Bradshaw 1813. With its black threads against the dark tan ground the cartouche is a highly visual centerpiece and is surrounded by 12 angels (3 in each corner - one full figure & 2 “heads & wings”) and is enclosed by an outer border consisting of vining flowers or trefoil shapes. Viewing size of the sampler measures ~10” x 12¾” with a total framed size of ~12½” x 15¼” (not including its original hanging ring). The molded wood & gesso frame is certainly the original one and has been overpainted gold and its current black. The verse that Miss Bradshaw chose for her sampler follows below, complete with a few misspellings and one backwards “s”. (Note: the older use of “f” in place of “s” in several words that I’ve highlighted in blue). On Friendfhip Tell me ye knowing and discerning few ?Where I may find a friend thats firm and true ?Who dare stand by me when in deep distrees ?And then his love and friendship most exprefs ? Who by a fecret simpathy (sic) can share ?In al’ my griefs my mifery and cares ?He must be faithfull prudent juft and wife ?That can to fuch a pitch of friendship rife ?Signed: H Bradshaw 1813 The condition of the sampler is good overall with only minor losses but with heavy water stains to the edges - areas outside of the cartouche. I had originally planned to have an oval mat cut for the sampler so as to minimize or eliminate the areas of stain but reconsidered and have enjoyed it just “as is”. I purchased the sampler in North Carolina but am unable to provide any earlier provenance as Miss Bradshaw did not give us her first name. The sampler has been stabilized with an acid-free backing and displays beautifully. Terms: Shipping within the US is $20.00; insurance is optional but highly recommended.
