HERIZ District is a collection of villages in the close proximity of Tabriz in northwestern Iran. The district lies close to the magnificent Sabalan Peak at the southern tip of Caucasian mountains. The Heriz rugs without doubt are one of the most remarkable group of Persian rugs. Heriz rugs are very durable due to use of strong wool, thick pile and compact weave. The wool is lustrous, push and very strong. The dyestuffs mostly are vegetable based which results in beautiful and clear shades. Their colors are well balanced and harmonic. HERIZ rugs respond particularly well when placed on wood flooring or in the proximity of wooden objects such as antiques or primitive art. It is also well suited for modern decor. All Heriz rugs are artfully drawn and masterfully executed. Featured here is a beautiful 100+years old Ahar Heriz with a bold medallion design incorporating the rare curvilinear patterns unique to the Ahar Heriz. The beautiful oxblood field, extra large ivory corners filled with jewel toned flowers and large navy border of rare Bakshiash treatment add a special positive energy to this rug. Note how the border corners all match, rarely seen and the sign of a true master weaver. Complete and original with fully saturated vegetable dyes and the softest wool quality on cotton foundation, nice shiny low pile(knotheads) attesting to the quality hard wearing wool used in these rugs. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE COLORS, AND THIS ANTIQUE AHAR HAS THEM!! The old Serapis are so cherished because they have the incredible colors that no one else can seem to produce other than the ancient Caucasian tribes which also command the best prices. Some say its the well water in the area, noted for its special softness, which makes the wool take the dyes thoroughly, saturated in a manner that they last forever and age with amazing grace. But not all the old Heriz age so gracefully, with some going to gray and some just washing out completely. This rug still holds the bold colors, from fully saturated vegetable dyes created by the hand of a master dyer. This rug is a recent import from Iran where 100 years of bare foot traffic have given the wool and color that shiny patina of age and the rug has entered its most attractive phase which it should maintain for many years. The colors are clear and crisp with no color run, holes, moth or odor. It is clean and ready for immediate use. It's the color that brings the high auction prices and rugs comparable to this have brought $15,000 to $20,000 at auction.
