New York, 1865. Published by Johnson & Ward. This wonderful Atlas of hand Colored Maps measures approx. 14 3/4” x 18 3/4” and contains 102 pages of Maps and 123 pages of text. The Maps include 38 color double page maps, 22 color single page maps, plus other charts and plates. The majority of the Maps are of American interest. The double page Texas map is simply stunning. The atlas is bound in its’ original 1/2 leather and cloth covers which are intact and tight but worn at the bottom edge with some water damage. The interior is complete with all maps, plates, text pages, end papers and blank leaves are present. The Maps are generally in very good condition. The hand coloring on all of the Maps is bright and vibrant with no fading. There is however, a water stain at the bottom of all of the maps - it is somewhat lighter on some maps and darker on others - see the scans below for a good indication of this staining. Both the Map sheets and the text pages are uniformly age tones. Otherwise the double page Map of Ohio is 3/4 split at the central fold with wear at the split and light edge wear and there are a handful of other double page Maps with approx. 2” separations at the bottom of the central folds. The Texas Map has a small, tight, star shaped tear near the top center of the sheet. Otherwise all Maps are tightly bound and very attractive. Most would display wonderfully if matted and framed while others could be easily restored with a light cleaning. Overall the outline coloring is EXTREMELY bright and vibrant - as bright as we have ever seen in the dozens of Johnson’s Atlases we have handled over the last 28 years. A wonderful, intact 1865 Johnson’s Family Atlas with highly desirable hand colored maps showing the United States at the close of the Civil War and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
