Philadelphia, 1864. Published by S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr. This wonderful Atlas of hand Colored Maps measures approx. 13 1/4” x 16 3/4” and contains 49 single page and 4 double page maps in bright hand color (32 of US Interest). Double page maps include The World on the Mercator Projection, US Map, NY/NH/VT/MA/RI/CT, Mexico/Central America/West Indies. 6 (of 7) single page city plans include Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New Orleans, Washington, D.C. and Cincinnati. The double page US map shows an early configuration of the North Central and Western Region. Minnesota, Illinois, Maine, Texas and California appear alone on single pages. The Texas map has an inset of Galveston, the Illinois map has an inset map of Chicago and the California map has insets of San Francisco and Settlements in the Great Salt Lake Country. The atlas is bound in its’ original 1/2 leather and cloth covers which are intact but worn and separated from the bound pages at the inner front hinge. There are also some stains to the front board. The interior pages / Maps are complete except for the Map of the City of New York which is lacking. The Maps are generally in excellent condition. The hand coloring on all of the Maps is bright and vibrant with no fading. The sheets are very clean throughout. The title page and the list of Maps are detached and worn and the first Map (The Hemisphere Map of the World) has some light foxing. The Double Map of the United States is a bit worn along the bottom edge and has a 2” tear at the center of that edge. The Mao of California has soiling at the edges, minor edge wear and 2 short edge tears. The remaining Maps are bright, clean, crisp and vibrant!! They would display wonderfully framed and this Atlas could be considered a candidate to be broken and sold as single maps - as such it is a gold mine of beautiful American Maps. Overall the outline coloring is EXTREMELY bright and vibrant - brighter than we have ever seen in the dozens of Mitchell’s Atlases we have handled over the last 28 years. The state maps are generally very clean and brilliantly colored. A wonderful collection of hand colored maps showing the United States during the Civil War and a fantastic addition to any collection!! Sold without reserve!!! Good Luck!!!
