Carved Agate Sterling Butter Knife The hallmarks on this wonderful piece have me totally confused. The first is a scrawny male head with what looks like a crown, but the closest English royalty mark I could find was 1784. The date letter is definitely the 1761 ‘F’ that on this piece looks like a dolphin doing a tail stand. The third mark is a total mystery! The closest I came to the 6 pointed star was Tunisia, I think. I will take an expert to identify this one! The handle is solid reddish brown agate, carved and polished to a brilliant mirror finish. A pin apparently travels through the handle, and secures the stone at a small point on the tip. The only flaws are two kinks at the tip of the blade about ¼ inch apart. The blade has some minor scuffs, and a few shallow pits, but nothing that detracts from the beauty of this amazing knife. It measures 7 1/8 inches long.
