Description
SOME ACCOUNT OF THE CONDUCT OF THE RELIGIOUS SOCIETY OF FRIENDS TOWARDS THE INDIAN TRIBES IN THE SETTLEMENT OF THE COLONIES OF EAST AND WEST JERSEY AND PENNSYLVANIA WITH A BRIEF NARRATIVE OF THEIR LABOURS FOR THE CIVILIZATION AND CHRISTIAN INSTRUCTION OF THE INDIANS FROM THE TIME OF THEIR SETTLEMENT IN AMERICA, TO THE YEAR 1843: Published in London in 1844, an account of Quaker activities among the American Indians. This book is particularly noted for its large (21.5" X 19") fold-out map, titled "A Map of North America denoting the boundaries of the Yearly Meetings of the Friends and the locations of the various Indians Tribes". Facing the title page is also a smaller (4.25" X 6.25") map titled " Aboriginal America East of the Mississippi". The book remains in good condition for its age. The spine is missing, replaced by black cloth tape. The covers show some general wear and water staining. The binding seems to be holding and the text is in fine shape for the most part. This copy came from a university library and has a few library marks as well as an owner bookplate and signature. The larger map has a few thin tears, with three tape repairs on the reverse; it otherwise shows only minor handling and age. The smaller map has a 1" tear at the bottom of the margin, not affecting the image, which remains in fine shape. An extremely rare item in any condition. The book measures just under 6" X 9", 247 pages. Ships promptly & securely.
