Description
pvjeff Store Pre-Columbian NAZCA Ocelot Stirrup Pot, Peru 100-800 AD This NAZCA Culture ceramic represent a striped, earth-tone colored Ocelot or Pampas Cat that has a vicious face with many detail on it. One of the most famous and distinctive features of their art culture is the polychrome pottery, which has attracted attention because of its technological refinement and the exciting symbolism of its motifs, and some of the most appealing aspects of Nazca art were its animal figures. The Nazcas, who flourished in an area consisting of a system of valleys on the southern coast of Peru between 300 BC and AD 800. They were also responsible for the famous Nazca Lines and their ceremonial city of Cahuachi. This Ocelot has a close parallel to the great feline whiskered mask design that are found on other ceramics and forehead ornaments. The overall color is reddish-brown with a dark tan on its chest and lower legs with black decorations. The design has short stripes painted on it's back and sides, spots on its lower legs, hash marks on its chest, and the eyes and mouth also have markings, which probably represent whiskers and lashes. The toothed mouth is open with large fangs. There are still some accretions and dirt on the vessel, so it was obviously a funerary piece from a burial site. The piece is in very good shape considering its age with only two very tiny holes behind the right ear. It measures approx. 9" long x 6 1/2" tall x 4" wide. It is a Museum Quality piece and would be a fabulous addition to any collection. PLEASE ask questions or request additional pictures BEFORE you bid as I DO NOT have a return policy! Thanks.
