Description
An exceptional museum quality Mayan polychrome decorated ceramic bowl on 4 rattle feet dating to the late classic (600-900 AD). The bowl is 12" in diameter and 5" tall. The central tondo is decorated with a human figure who appears to be riding some sort of mythical animal. The inside rim is decorated with a series of human figures holding what look like fans in each hand. The exterior, bottom and legs have geometric decoration. There is also an animal head in relief on the the external side surrounded by a painted representation of the animals body, possibly a jaguar. A similar bowl from El Salvador is illustrated in plates 80 and 81 of "Art of the Maya" by Ferdinand Anton (Thames and Hudson, 1978). There are some burial stains on the interior and 2 pieces have been reattached at the rim (see pictures). Otherwise the bowl is in very good condition with little paint loss. It is guaranteed ancient and as described with a 7 day return privilege. Priority Mail shipping/insurance will be $30. Payment must be received within 5 days of the close of the auction and personal checks must clear before shipping. Thanks for looking and good luck.
