He is known as a writer who "expressed pagan sensuality with stylistic perfection".He studied at the Ecole Alsacienne in Paris, and developed a close friendship with a future Nobel Prize winner and champion of Homosexual rights, Andre Gide.In the 1890s he became a friend of the noted English dramatist and homosexual Oscar Wilde. Some of the poems were tailored as songs for voice and piano. In 1955, one of the first lesbian organizations in America called itself Daughters of Bilitis, and to this day Pierre Louys "Songs" continues to be an important work for lesbians.The note and lithograph of Pierre Louys are framed and matted. The note is written in French and the English translation is " Dear Sir, It is I who regrets this unfortunate postal strike. Would you like to come to see me tomorrow, Thursday, around four o'clock? If you are not free would you make another appointment for next week either at your house or at mine. I pray you, dear sir, to believe in the sincerity of my feelings in regards to you."
