The Mbuya, or village masks, characterized by their somber expression, appear in more then fifteen different forms. The most important ones are: Mbangu, the epileptic; Tundu, the madman,Ngobo; the prostitute, Gabuku; the young flirt, Nganga Ngombo; the diviner, Kiwoyo-Muyombo the bearded mask; and Phumbu the chieftain’s mask. The art of Western Pende is characterized by the Katundu style. They are considered to be the true keepers of traditional sculpture. The Pende recognize no common authority, and show little respect for their chiefs. They have no dynastic traditions. They are matrilineal, and the eldest maternal uncle in the family is recognized as head of the lineage, and exercises social control within individual communitiesThe Pende people are primarily farmers, who cultivate millet, maize, plantains, and peanuts. Occasional hunting is conducted with nets, bows, arrows or guns, and fishing with traps or baskets. The Mahamba cult is central to Pende religion. Circumcision and initiation is mandatory for young men. Shrines are based on the ancestors, (Mvumbi) cult Malemba. If the ancestors are ignored or neglected they inflict hardship on individuals or the whole lineage. Please note: Older pieces of African artifacts have imperfections due to time and wear.
