Description
A pair of knitting needle guards, made in the Netherlands, about 1850. They are shaped as real keys with a beautiful open top. The guards are attached to a chain and hook, which make it possible to adjust them to the size of the needles. I can't find a hallmark. See for exactly these guards Kay Sullivan, Needlework Tools and Accessories, page 180, Plate 73. Each key is 1 1/2" long, 5/8" wide; the total length of the keys and the chain is 14". The weight is 7.3 gram. The condition is very good; it would be excellent if there was not a visible dent in one of the keys. That key has some minor dents as well; but the overall condition of this item is, as told, very good.  Today I have listed two pairs of knitting needle guards, both depicted on the same page of the book by Kay Sullivan.... * * * * * From now on I am listing my antique, pre-1930, sewing items in this new Ebay category, Antiques > Sewing (Pre-1930). Please take a look in this category to see my listing of antique Dutch silver, gold and enamel sewing items: a 19th century 14 carat gold thimble, a filigree needle book, a 19th century silver sewing set, an enamel / silver Gabler thimble, a 19th century silver pin wheel, a 19th century silver pin box, an 18th century needle case, a 19th century needle case, a 19th century agate / silver tambour hook, 19th century knitting needle guards and more.
