Description
Significant original pair comprised of 19th century blue & gray presentation inscribed stoneware jug & pitcher presented to the sister of the pottery maker. One piece is a jug measuring 9 3/4" tall by 5 1/2" diameter across the base. The jug is incised inscribed in long hand writing with the following: "Emma L Hard West Leesport Pa John E F Zellers Schuylkill Ave Reading Pa. No. 155 D P Shenfelder Pottry Manufactory in Reading Pa 1885 Harry Zerby Reading Pa 1885".There are several sprigs of leaves & flowers & one "X" or cross hatched line decoration. The incised letters are decorated in cobalt. The spout has a couple of chips & a small crack. The spout has some very old make do repairs to where there were once apparently other old chips on the spout. The original handle appears to have been lost at some time in the distant past. The handle was replaced long ago with a make do replacement handle. So, that is the complete description of the jug. Next I will describe the pitcher. The pitcher stands 8 1/2" tall. It measures approximately 7 3/8" across the widest point & the handle. The top diameter of the open area of the pitcher is 4 5/8". The diameter across the chest is 6". The diameter of the base is 4 7/16".The pitcher is inscribed in long hand with the approximate following words: "Miss Emma Le Hard my Sister Manufactory Nov 5 189 Remember these words on here buy your brother John E. F. Zellers Reading Pa Take Care of this Pitcher and think of me when you take it in you hands Their is a happy land not fare away their is where the angles stand Good by to Yous all and Live happy".Note: after the first three numbers (189) in the date the potter forgot to put on the last numeral in the date. So, the full date would have been a date in the 1890's. Additional note: some of the original inscribed spelling of the words on the stoneware is incorrect as per the actual inscription which is on the stoneware. We have left the spelling exactly as we see it on the stoneware. It is relatively easy to read, if sufficient time is taken, to read the inscription carefully. The incised letters are decorated in cobalt. There is an old make do repair on the spout to an old chip. There is a 1" hairline at the top lip at the side of this make do repair. There is a hairline crack which runs from the back top rim by the handle down about 1/2 way on to the pitcher. The hairline extends a little to the left when the handle is viewed straight on & just barely touches the top of the letter "P" in "Pa" in the third line of the inscription near the handle. So, the total length of the hairline from top rim to the side area is approximately 6". .The pitcher has what appears to be the original handle. But, the handle was repaired to an unknown degree at some time in the past. There is some later slip over the handle which apparently conceals some sort of repair. There are some small spots where this coating has come off revealing signs of the original handle underneath. Two amazing, historical, & very advanced pieces of presentation stoneware which would easily fit well into the most advanced private or public stoneware collection. We guarantee this item to be original as described.
