This breathtaking "makrama" which is a reproduction of Ottoman hand embroidered early textile dating to the late 17th century, can wonderfully complement your decor! What is the Makrama?   Known as mahrame in Southeast  Anatolia and makrama in the Aegean region, this large cover has a variety of names dependingon the purpose for which it is used. Some examples are the şerbet makraması (fruit drink napkin), yemek makraması (dinner napkin) and abdest makraması (hand towel). In general they are rectangular in shape. Such covers, which were 40×60 cm. in the 16th century, became as large as 90×150 cm. in subsequent centuries.     Furthermore, large dinner napkins used as tablecloths are known as dolama. Their most important feature is their is use in front of diners seated on the flor around large food trays where, in addition to preventing the scattering of bread crumbs and food morsels, they also served as napkins. Such cloths were made of fine  linen and cotton cloth and had 15-25 cm (sometimes even as much as 40 cm.) wide embroidered sections at either end. These generally consisted of colorful floral , curving branch, fruit and foliate motifs and, particulary in later centuries, landspaces, escutcheons, houses, tombs, Ottoman inscriptions and musical instruments. As fort he techniques, these included in particular  counted stitch as well as muşabbak (netted stitch), pesend (double running stitch), sarma (raised satin stitch), susma (pattern darning) and civankaşı (a satin stitch used to produce a zigzag pattern). Their edges are generally trimmed with needle lace. In earlier centuries the bibs attached to the necks of sherbet jugs to the offered to guests at en gagement and wedding parties were personally embroidred by the bride as part of her trousseau. Towards the end of the 18th century and in the 19th century the function of these pieces changed, coming to be used as headscarvers.
