Published during the Revolutionary Period, this map is dated 1776 by scholars; however it is also included in the Atlas Geographique (Nuremberg 1778). Obviously, historical circumstances explain the publication of that map: all the Europeans follow the developments of the "Revolutionaries" of America very attentively.  In 1774 was the meeting of the first national congress; the first phases of the armed conflict began in 1775 and, on July 4th 1776, the thirteen colonies declared themselves free and independent under the name United States of America. (It was only in 1783 that a treaty ended the war.  The thirteen original states are shown in original distinct colors, and are also indicated by different colors in the title, which is within an ornate border surmounted by a crown and the royal coat of arms.  This "Amerique Angloise" is representative of the kind of engraving in fashion by the second half of the 18th century.  It is also the product of a compilation of the works of certain other cartographers. Very light browning along an original vertical fold. Pale impression on some spots, located principally on the (printed) frame.  Margins trimmed close.  Horizontal fold (original).  Full coloring for the first thirteen states (U.S.), outline coloring elsewhere.  A very fine map. These maps have been printed or engraved using the quality and types of papers of each age, country and editor, and so these papers have been preserved over time.  Considering this, it is normal to occasionally find some traces of browning or oxidizing, depending upon the conditions of preservation of any map over the years.  Also noteworthy is the extremely variable nature and composition of the ingredients in each type of paper.  Wherever this is light, it is not mentioned in the individual descriptions.  Otherwise, we do our best to give the best description of the exact state of conservation for each document.  All other kinds of defects such as tears, spots, soiling, worm holes, etc., if present, are described as best we can. The dimensions given are of the printed area in centimeters (height x width) to the nearest millimeter, but allow for paper distortion.
