Its arrangement of mirrors allows it to measure twice the angle of the scale.  This is a nice demonstration piece of over eight inch radius and weighs about a kilo. Care has been taken not to use heavy woods and to keep the brass parts slim to enable easy lightweight handling.  There is a hinged magnifier to help read the vernier scale, and there are six swing-arm filters.  Like with traditional octants, an adjustable brass peep hole is provided instead of the telescopes that are used in sextants. On the back, is a rounded wooden handle that allows for a comfortable grip.  Great for nautical collectors, navigation demonstrations and students.
